My name is Tiffany Hutchens but I often go by Hutch! I love mountain biking and really all outdoor adventures. I have worn many hats over the years but continue to find myself teaching, coaching, playing, and pursuing challenging endeavors. I reside in Evansville, IN where I hike, cycle, climb, kayak with my dogs, camp, pickleball, lift weights, and work as an Orthopedic Bodyworker and trainer.
The Embodied Rider (program) is the coupling of mental training techniques and Somatic Experiencing to aid rider, climbers, and really all adventurists tap in to their inner landscape and begin to understand it better. Learning techniques are extremely important but what about improving your skills in resiliency, risk assessment, and emotional capacity?
Our journey to discovery isn't limited by location or sport, but exploring the language and introspection of our inner existence hasn't been commonplace. Somatic Experiencing is it's own, internationally recognized and practiced modality to regulate the nervous system and build resiliency in life. The Embodied Rider applies those concepts
Our journey to discovery isn't limited by location or sport, but exploring the language and introspection of our inner existence hasn't been commonplace. Somatic Experiencing is it's own, internationally recognized and practiced modality to regulate the nervous system and build resiliency in life. The Embodied Rider applies those concepts to the outdoors where fear, exposure, insecurity, trauma, and physiological freeze certainly exist.
This is a community. What you have to say is just as important, if not more so than what I have to say. We all rise when one person feels SEEN, HEARD, REGULATED and appropriately CHALLENGED. To share, complete the form here.
I have been riding MTBs since 1998 and aside from coaching multiple athletic teams I was a certified IMBA coach, 2015- 2022. Clinics I have coached at include: Brown County Bikes' Campside Sessions, IN, Sedona MTB Festival, AZ, KYMBA Women's Clinic, KY, Brown County Epic Weekend, IN, and Women Helping Women to Love Riding, IN. As of late I have been organizing some bikepacking trips!
This is the crown jewel service of The Embodied Rider Program. Coaching and guidance tailored to your internal and external needs for improving your capacity for stress in the outdoors.
I am not exaggerating when I say that Somatic Experiencing changed the way I exist in this world. Even before there is a sense of self there is a body and that body is controlled by the nervous system. That nervous system reacts to stimuli from the outer environment AND inner sensations. It is the latter of these that we have lost the most connection with on our various journeys through time and space. Ok, that was a little 'new age-y' but isn't that what we hope growth leads us to?!
I will continue my attempt to explain exactly what Somatic Experiencing is throughout this page but if you want more capacity, resiliency, self- compassion, and inner regulation (see calm knowing) then Somatic work is for you! For more specific information visit www.traumahealing.org.
How does learning about your nervous system help your sports performance? Well if you have ever experienced the unnerving feeling of 'being exposed', or feeling unsafe despite what your conscious brain is telling you then you have experienced the involuntary shift of the nervous system state! It happens without us thinking or deciding to, which means we cannot think our way back to 'calm knowing'. Our past experiences influence our future state , which you could generalize as 'our vibes' in that moment. If the vibes are off, you sure as shit arent going to feel good about making that tough, athletic move. You may will yourself through it but I assure you that is not real cash in the bank of regulation and capacity to endure risk.
These are not your run of the mill mental training techniques, although those along with breathing dynamics can be tools in your bag of resourcing tricks! First, we acquaint you with your nervous system; she's been their all along but somewhere your sense of introspection fell away. Then we fill up that bag of tricks with practices on and off your bike (or kayak, or horse, etc) to build capacity to move through physiological states, regulate your system, and explore this whole new way of experiencing your body within this world! Sorry, I started to float away again but I sincerely believe everyone can benefit from Somatic Experiencing work, but most of all adventure athletes like yourself!
